Plan Your Free Ride to NYE Celebrations

With New Year's Eve parties taking shape across Victoria, Metlink is encouraging all party people to plan their journey to celebrations ahead of time and make use of the free, all night public transport.

Metlink chief executive officer Bernie Carolan said that as public transport operators gear up for a busy night, patrons heading into town or to a mate's place should start organising their journey now.

"Large crowds are expected in the city, but if you plan your journey ahead of time you'll have more time on the night to enjoy yourself.

"The Metlink Call Centre is open daily from 6am until midnight and all night on New Year's Eve so call 131 638 or use the journey planner at metlinkmelbourne.com.au to plan your way to celebrations," Mr Carolan encouraged.

Families planning to enjoy the early fireworks can avoid crowds at Flinders Street Station and use Richmond and Jolimont stations instead now that the 9.15pm fireworks have moved to Yarra Park which surrounds the MCG.

See the Metlink website for more information on getting public transport to Yarra Park and City of Melbourne's other free event sites Alexandra Gardens, Federation Square, Birrarung Marr and Waterfront City.

Metropolitan trains, trams and NightRider buses will run all night and will be free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until the first normal scheduled service the next day.

Trains will operate to a normal weekday timetable with extra services running throughout the night. Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations will be open all night. City Loop stations (Flagstaff, Parliament and Melbourne Central) close at midnight.

Trams will run all night with the exception of the City Circle and routes 24, 30 and 82. All other tram services will run every 8 10 minutes between 6pm and 2am, then every 30 minutes between 2am and the first scheduled tram on New Year's Day.

Buses will run to a normal weekday timetable, with some reduced to a summer timetable.

NightRider buses will run after midnight every half an hour as normal, but in the city they will depart from a temporary location on Collins Street between Swanston and Russell streets.

V/Line travel will be free for services arriving at their destination after 6pm. V/Line passengers can enjoy a free return trip home on New Year's Day on the first service leaving Melbourne to each regional location.
