Pre-Event to COP15: Focus on Transport Sector

COPENHAGEN, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire-Asianet/ --

    - Symposium: Towards a Low Carbon Transport System

At a climate symposium in Copenhagen on 5 December, transport,

energy and climate experts from Asia, Europe and the US will explore what

must be done in order to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by

50% by the year 2050. The main focus of the discussions is how to reduce CO2

emissions in the world's transport sector.

"At the symposium we will put forward international policy

recommendations to accomplish the reduction of the transport emissions in

order to move towards a positive future beyond COP15," says Mr. Jiro Hanyu,

Chairman, Institution for Transport Policy Studies, Japan.

Keynote speakers at the symposium include Dr. Rajendra Pachauri,

Chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); Dr. Takamitsu

Sawa, Professor at the Graduate School of Policy Science at Japan's

Ritsumeikan University and outspoken climate opinion maker; and Dr. Lewis

Fulton, Senior Transport Energy Specialist, Energy Technology Policy

Division, International Energy Agency, OECD.

The symposium speakers agree that reducing worldwide CO2

emissions from the transport sector is crucial in order to significantly

reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. It is, however, especially difficult

for developing countries to take actions to reduce transport emissions, due

to these countries' needs in pursuing sustainable social and economic

development. Even for developed countries, it is difficult to change the

energy consumption habits of the public.

At the Copenhagen event, global policy recommendations on how to

reach global reduction targets of CO2 emission from the transport sector both

in developed and in developing countries will be discussed.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on

Climate Change (IPCC) will participate at the symposium's press conference to

be held on Saturday December 5, 10:00 a.m. at the SAS Royal Hotel, venue

Oxford 11.

The event is organised by the Institution for Transport Policy

Studies and supported by The Nippon Foundation.
