MEDIA RELEASE

22 DECEMBER 2009

ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS IN WEST TAMWORTH

A new traffic island and changed traffic conditions have been introduced to boost

road safety at Bridge and Phillip streets in West Tamworth

“To coincide with the opening of a new McDonalds restaurant in West Tamworth

changes to the intersection of Bridge and Phillip streets will be made to manage

increased traffic flow generated by the development,” an RTA spokesperson said.

The work will involve building a central traffic island along Bridge Street and changing

traffic lanes to allow for a protected right turn into Phillip Street from Bridge Street.

Right turns from Phillip Street into Bridge Street will no longer be allowed.

The spokesperson said the improvements are required because of the expected

increased traffic and to provide protection for motorists turning right into Phillip Street.

“Motorists heading towards the city from Phillip Street can do so by turning left into

Bridge Street and then using the nearby roundabout at Mahoney Avenue to do a U-

turn.  This will be safer than the previously permitted right turn,” the spokesperson

said.

Until work starts, the developer has installed temporary concrete barriers to direct

traffic. These barriers will be in place until work begins in February 2010.

Work on the intersection will take place between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday,

and from 7am to 1pm on Saturdays. The RTA thanks motorists and residents in

advance for their patience and understanding while this work is carried out.
