SYDNEY HARBOUR TUNNEL SPEED LIMIT CHANGE
The removal of the old Sydney Harbour Tunnel toll plaza has been completed, allowing the
speed limit through this area to be increased to 80kmh.
The speed limit change will be implemented after overnight scheduled maintenance
closures for the southbound tunnel are completed on Friday 18 December, (weather
permitting).
An RTA spokesperson said the toll plaza canopy had been removed and the lanes had
been realigned, allowing the speed limit to be increased from 60kmh.
The toll plaza was removed progressively during routine night maintenance earlier this
year to avoid inconvenience to motorists, the spokesperson said.
This has allowed the lanes to be realigned to provide a smoother trip along this section of
the road.
Previously this 350 metre stretch needed a 60kmh speed limit to allow motorists to travel
safely through the toll plaza.
Now that its been removed, the speed limit will be increased to allow for a consistent
80kmh speed limit from the Gore Hill Freeway and Warringah Freeway approaches right
through the entire length of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
This is the final move in streamlining operations since the Tunnel went cashless in July
2007, the spokesperson said.
The 80kmh speed limit will come into effect from 18 December with signs and road
markings in place to alert motorists to the change.
