SYDNEY METRO STAGE 1 COST
Media reports today suggesting significant cost increases for Sydney Metro
Stage 1 are wrong.
The estimated cost of the project remains $4.8 billion, with a contingency of up
to $5.3 billion.
These estimates take into account the station construction and tunnelling both
under the city and harbour.
Detailed design work and underground investigations have been completed, so
that Sydney Metro engineers know exactly where other infrastructure, such as
transport tunnels, is located.
The tunnelling method is the same for under the harbour and through the city
and there has been no suggestion there will be added costs.
This method, using a tunnel boring machine, has been used successfully in
Sydney before and is widely used around the world.
