Melbourne’s Superliner Arrives Tomorrow

Melbourne will welcome its own superliner tomorrow, when Dawn Princess sails into town for a four-

month summer season of cruising from the city.

The 77,000-tonne Princess Cruises’ ship carries 2000 passengers and offers a range of luxury

features, including a new giant outdoor movie screen on her pool deck and a child-free Sanctuary

retreat.

Stretching eight metres wide and more than four metres high, the custom-built LED screen is a first

for an Australian-based cruise ship, providing passengers with the perfect way to watch the latest

release movies as well as concerts and sporting events while they relax by the ship’s pool.

Dawn Princess also offers an oceanview gym, luxurious spa, eight restaurants and cafes and seven

lounges, while her 998 cabins include more than 400 with private balconies.

The superliner will offer a series of seven round-trip cruises from Melbourne between now and

March, injecting more than $7 million into the Victorian economy through passenger and crew

spending, port fees and ship stores.

Her first cruise – a 28-night circumnavigation of Australia - departs from Station Pier at midnight

tomorrow (Nov 18).

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which represents Princess Cruises, said Dawn Princess’

Victorian deployment followed a successful Melbourne season for her sister ship, Sun Princess, last

summer.

“Melburnians have really responded to the opportunity to sail from their doorstep. Like tens of

thousands of other Australians they’ve discovered that cruising is a very convenient and relaxing way

to travel – you just unpack your bags once, then sit back and enjoy yourself while the destinations

come to you,” Ms Sherry said.

She said Dawn Princess’ new movie screen and sanctuary were proving extremely popular with

Australians.

“We like to offer our guests a range of different ways to enjoy themselves and an outdoor movie

screen is a perfect option given our great climate. What better way to relax than a movie under the

stars?”

Ms Sherry said Dawn Princess’ arrival marked the start of a big Victorian cruise season for Carnival

Australia, which represents six major cruise lines. Carnival brand ships will make a total of 27 visits to

Victoria over the summer cruise season, including a high profile dual visit by Cunard’s elegant liner

Queen Victoria and Seabourn’s new luxury ship Odyssey on February 22, 2010.
