ULURU MANAGEMENT PLAN A SUCCESS ON EVERY FRONT

The Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) today welcomed Environment Minister Peter Garrett's approval of the new management plan for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The plan will ensure the sustainability of the tourism industry in the Northern Territory and the preservation of one of Australia's great natural icons.

TTF Managing Director Christopher Brown said the plan strikes the right balance between the needs of the traditional owners, the environment and the value of tourism to the area.

"The tourism industry recognises that operating in culturally and environmentally sensitive areas is a serious responsibility" said Mr Brown.

"At the same time, we want to ensure employment and economic opportunities for
regional communities, many of which are held by local indigenous people".

"The Minister, his office and the team at Parks Australia are to be congratulated on their preparedness to consult with industry and the community. This process has been a first class exercise in public policy development".

"The relationship between tourism and the environment has never been stronger than under Minister Garrett's leadership".

The plan sets clear preconditions before any possible closure of the climb is to proceed.

TTF welcomes the guarantee of at least 18 months notice before the climb could be closed so that the tourism industry can adjust their products and marketing to reflect such a change.

Mr Brown said the other crucial element is the commitment to develop new experiences to reinvigorate tourism at Uluru.

"New product development and marketing support will be critical in attracting people to the Territory and giving them a reason to visit one of the world's great attractions."

"We look forward to government commitment to make these experiences happen". Mr Brown said Uluru is a key driver of tourism visitation to the Northern Territory, which contributes almost $1 billion to the Territory's gross state product.
