WIRE Welcomes Abortion Law Reform
WIRE - Women’s Information today welcomed the Law Reform Commission’s
“Law of Abortion: Final Report” tabled in parliament yesterday.
Samiro Douglas, CEO of WIRE congratulated the Commission on their work and
urged a prompt response from Parliament.
“The decriminalisation of abortion in Victoria is long overdue,” Ms Douglas said.
“The Law Reform Commission received 519 submissions across a wide range of
views. This consultation has been broad and comprehensive. It is time to ‘put
this issue to bed’ now,” Ms Douglas said.
WIRE now urges members of the Victorian parliament to decide on one of the
three models and the subsequent legislative changes needed to finally
decriminalise abortion in Victoria.
“It’s time to enshrine the right of all women to safe and legal abortion and to
exercise full choice in managing their fertility, thereby affording them dignity and
respect. This decision should be in their hands,” Ms Douglas said.
