How economic crisis hits the young

The problems facing young people as Australia’s economy slows will be the focus of

a forum at RMT University.

“The Global Financial Crisis and Young People” is a free event organised by the

Youth Work discipline within the School of Global Studies, Social Science and

Planning.

Four speakers will explore the issues.

Professor Richard Heaney, from the School of Economics, Finance and

Marketing and an expert on financial markets and corporate finance, will talk

about the causes and impacts of the financial crisis.

Associate Professor Chris Chamberlain is the Director of the Centre for

Applied Social Research and a housing expert. He will be looking at the

impact of the crisis on housing and homelessness among young people.

Nicholas Wyman is the CEO of WPC Group, one of the largest employers of

apprentices and trainees in Australia, with 500 on the books. He will look at

the decline in job opportunities in Australia for young people and the need to

maintain commitment to skills development.

Kasy Chambers is the Executive Director of Anglicare Australia, a national

network of Anglican care and social justice agencies. She will discuss the

impact of the crisis on the many social services used by young people.
